Astypalea is a small butterfly-shaped island in the Dodecanese island group and is an example of a “smart island”. The island has shifted to electric vehicles that both locals and tourists can take advantage of. The electric-vehicle sharing service astyGO allows renting of electric cars, e-scooters and e-bikes through a mobile application. At the same time police cars, ambulances and public transport are electric. 

The island of Astypalea has collaborated with the Volkswagen Group and has reduced the island’s vehicle numbers from 1,500 engine vehicles to around 1,000 electric ones. 

Astypalea is pioneering sustainable tourism by transitioning to a “Smart and Sustainable Island” model.
